| 2014 Championship Breakfast Speaker - Darcy Marquardt |
|

Three-time Olympian, Olympic Silver Medalist and World Champion, Darcy Marquardt has worked tirelessly in pursuit of these dreams over the course of her 14 year rowing career. She has learned that no matter what the obstacles, with perseverance and teamwork, you can achieve things you never thought possible. Darcy credits her parents and strong family values of integrity and commitment for creating the foundation from which her rowing career took off.
Marquardt’s greatest achievement, is not only the Silver medal performance in London, England at the 2012 Games but developing the ability to share her journey and inspire the next generation of leaders in people of all ages. Darcy was recently elected as a member of the BC Chapter of Olympians Canada, where she will serve in a leadership role to promote the Olympic Spirit nationwide, motivate and encourage youth, and celebrate and honour all those who have represented Canada at the Olympic Games.
The 7th Annual Vikes Championship Breakfast will be held in McKinnon Gym, on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, and is your chance to support Vikes Athletics. To date, the Vikes Championship Breakfast has raised over $2 million dollars for athletic financial awards, helping our student-athletes realize success in the classroom and on the field of competition.
Once again, the University of Victoria will match the first $200,000 raised in support of this initiative. Please consider purchasing a seat or table at this vital event. You have the option of registering and attending or donating virtually to the event, with both options then matched, hereby maximizing the impact of your generosity. Thank you for your consideration and support of Vikes Athletics!

Vikes Athletes and Alumni at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
|
|
As Victoria and the University of Victoria celebrate the 20-year anniversary of hosting the 1994 Commonwealth Games, several island-based athletes are currently competing at the 2014 games in Glasgow, Scotland. There are no shortage of Vikes representing Canada at the XX Commonwealth Games as thirteen former or current Vikes student-athletes and one coach have embarked on a journey to medal in field hockey, rowing, rugby sevens or swimming.
Vikes swimming alumni Ryan Cochrane opened up the Canadian medal count by scoring our first Gold in the 400m freestyle, and then earning another in the 1500m freestyle. In his final race of the multi-sport games, Cochrane won the 1500-m freestyle in a time of 14 minutes 44.03 seconds to make it two golds at this year's games.
Hillary Caldwell captured the bronze in the 200m backstroke, touching the wall third in 2:08.55. It's the second major international medal in her collection, joining her bronze in the same event at last year's FINA World Championships in Barcelona, where she swam a Canadian record of 2:06.80.
UVic Social Sciences alumna Catherine Pendrel will also be bringing home the gold in mountain biking.
Stay up to date with the progress of our athletes by following us on Twitter @uvicvikes. For more information on the event visit Glasgow2014.com.
