Ben Borley was a proud graduate of the University of Victoria. He completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Philosophy and went on to attain his post-graduate Diploma in Education. After becoming a schoolteacher, he taught a variety of grades and courses for 30 years in Kaslo, BC. He was a champion of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and loved to give his students the opportunity to explore, build and create.

Since 2017, Ben fought a brave battle with cancer. He passed away in May 2023, and is remembered by those who were inspired by his love of learning. He believed that, “Whatever opens up and encourages the human imagination is what leads us forward.”

As part of his end-of-life planning, he wanted to invite friends and family to donate to the University of Victoria in direct support of cancer research.

Gifts made in Ben’s memory will help to sponsor the research of Dr. Devika Chithrani, a UVic medical physicist with a goal to “reduce normal tissue toxicity present in radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as improve targeting and overall efficacy towards a better patient outcome”. Her lab is multifaceted, utilizing principles found in physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. Four disciplines that Ben loved.
