With wisdom, good humour and unparalleled enthusiasm, Calvin Sandborn has helped guide ELC students, clients, and colleagues for the past 20 years. Through his roles in teaching and supporting the ELC Clinic, Calvin has raised awareness about critical environmental issues, helped communities address environmental challenges, and inspired law students who were eager to learn and apply practical lawyering skills. He advocated to keep government and corporations accountable and to improve environmental protection laws in BC and beyond.
In honour of his many contributions to the ELC, Calvin is inviting folks to donate in his name to the Janet Person Environmental Law Centre Endowment Fund. Established in 2020 in memory of Janet Person, the Endowment Fund supports the work of the ELC Clinic, and it is the first fund ever to be included in UVic’s Fossil Fuel Free Investment Portfolio.
In Calvin’s words:
"The Environmental Law Centre is a unique place where some of Canada’s brightest and most principled young people get together with community groups and First Nations to protect our common home. When I came to ELC in 2003, we boldly asserted that our goal was to train Canada’s next generation of public interest environmental lawyers. We’ve done that – just look at the numerous ELC grads that have changed environmental and Aboriginal laws over the last two decades. It’s essential that the Environmental Law Centre continue with that vital work. Please donate to the Janet Person ELC Endowment."
