Hannah Madgen Memorial Scholarship

This bursary was established by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies to honour Hannah Madgen who lost her life in a tragic accident at the age of 21.  A talented trumpet player and former cadet, she came to Victoria after graduating from G.P. Vanier Secondary in Courtenay to attend the University of Victoria, where she majored in Greek and Roman studies.

She had been a student in this discipline for two years, paying her own way through school by working two jobs. She worked hard to stay in school, and as expenses went up, she just worked harder. In her third year, she chose to take the fall term off to work and pay down some of her student debt before she continued with her studies.  She took on a third job.  She became so busy she did not have time to socialize often. On a rare night off in September 2003, when returning home from being out with friends, she was struck by a car in Oak Bay.

Professors who knew her described her as always smiling, positive and uncomplaining, despite her heavy workload. She had discovered a genuine and enthusiastic interest in ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Enthusiasm was a defining characteristic of Hannah. In recognition of Hannah’s admirable qualities, the department developed this scholarship to help other students like her.
