Doreen Moser Scholarship Fund
Doreen Moser (nee Espey) was born on November 25, 1948 in The Pas, Manitoba and gratefully relocated to Vancouver Island as a child. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Sylvia Espey, and her brother Kevin Espey.
Doreen started studying sciences in September 1966 at the University of Victoria, where she met her biology lab partner and future husband, Gary Moser. They married on September 12, 1969, and after a stint in Merritt, B.C., they settled happily in Victoria in 1974. Doreen was a devoted wife and mother who supported each family member with enthusiasm in everything they did.
Doreen was immensely proud of her two independent-minded daughters who provided great joy for her. She deeply loved her family and learning about the world through travel and reading, was passionate about the Pacific Opera, and loved to nurture all of us through her cooking. Her family and friends will miss her warmth and generosity, and her enthusiasm and support.
Doreen is survived by her husband Gary, daughters Julia (Jamus) and Sarah (Michael), brother Dennis (Adele), and half-sister, Carol. She was known for befriending strangers who became fast friends thanks to her genuine curiosity and kindness. Doreen placed great importance on scientific inquiry, medical advancement, and service to her community, and has donated her corneas to a patient in need, and her body to the University of British Columbia medical school.
The family would like to convey its sincere appreciation to the physicians, nurses, respiratory technicians, and other staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their high quality of care, professionalism, and sensitivity to Doreen and our family during her time under their care.
Doreen was a lifelong supporter of the University of Victoria and we request that in lieu of flowers, you consider donating to a fund set up in Doreen’s name that will be used to support women students in need to carry out their studies at UVic.
