Sanjeev Singh Parmar Memorial Scholarship

Sanjeev Singh Parmar, Memorial, Family

Much loved friend, family and classmate, Sanjeev Singh Parmar, passed away on September 20, 2019.

Sanjeev came to UVic as a law student in 2005. While his intellect and work ethic earned him the respect of his classmates, his sense of justice, quirky sense of humour and commitment to values earned their admiration and friendship. Sanjeev was never afraid to express an unpopular opinion he believed correct, and was able to articulate it in a way that made even those who disagreed with him chuckle. He inspired others with his ability to fearlessly approach even the most daunting academic challenges of the program, often with an injection of 90s-era sitcom quotes.

After he graduated from UVic Law in 2007, he began his legal career in Vancouver before moving to Calgary. His initial focus was in securities law, but his skill set brought him into contact with other areas of the law. Throughout his career, Sanjeev worked for various companies and firms, including as legal counsel at a national law firm and a billion-dollar real estate mutual fund. He approached his career in much the same way he approached law school and life. No matter the challenge, Sanjeev overcame it with fearlessness, hard work, intelligence and humour.

Sanjeev was generous with his kindness. Born with a rare genetic condition, Fanconi Anemia, Sanjeev faced serious medical challenges both as a child and as an adult. Throughout everything, he maintained a deep sense of happiness and a love of life. Time and again, Sanjeev not only persevered in the face of adversity, he flourished. He was a source of light and laughter for all who had the privilege to know him.  He was also dedicated to helping others dealing with this and other rare blood conditions. He served on the board of the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplasia Association of Canada and on the board of Fanconi Canada, and he was also a member of the executive committee of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada - "Light the Night" campaign.

In 2015, Sanjeev and his wife, Caroline, had their daughter Avani. Sanjeev, always the favorite uncle, was a natural when it came to fatherhood. He adored Avani, and loved nothing more than holding her close against his heart. As a family, Sanjeev, Caroline and Avani loved to play at the park, ride bikes and go out for meals together.

Sanjeev had many, many friends, from all walks of life and from every period of his life. He will be remembered fondly whenever his friends and family are looking to debate politics or history or to share a particularly good joke.

Please help keep Sanjeev’s infectious humour, kindness and love of life alive as an enduring inspiration for others overcoming adversity by contributing to the Sanjeev Singh Parmar Memorial Scholarship.
