Karen was a highly valued, vibrant, and inspiring contributor to the Department of Sociology, the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, and the University of Victoria through her myriad of roles in academic and community life. She was a very successful teacher and mentor who loved instilling a passion for sociology into her students. In her role as Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Karen championed critical, responsive, accountable scholarship, and knowledge mobilization, and she was an outstanding and compassionate advocate for investing in, and giving back to individuals, collaborators, research communities, other investigators, and to the graduate students with whom she worked. The Karen Midori Kobayashi Memorial Scholarship aims to honour and contribute to keeping her memory, wisdom, passion and legacy alive through this scholarship. The scholarships will focus on one or more outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Social Sciences working on topics that seek to improve the lives of diverse and vulnerable older adults, and/or reduce the negative impacts of health inequalities on older persons.
All Donations to the scholarship are receipted, and will help reach a goal of $25,000 to endow the Karen Midori Kobayashi Memorial Scholarship, supporting students for years to come.
