Baneet Hans

A wave of new donor-funded awards reduces barriers to education

Baneet Hans is the first recipient of the new Scotiabank Scholarship for Law students. As a first-generation Canadian, Baneet’s decision to pursue law is connected to her Punjabi Sikh identity. “My community has faced a lot of tragedies and atrocities, and the resilience and perseverance of my people is a large motivator for me,” says Baneet.

Baneet says this scholarship will help her build a career that supports marginalized groups and combats racism. “It takes the pressure off and makes it easier to pursue the avenues of work that I’m passionate about,” says Baneet. “There’s many ways to serve, but activism work is calling my name.”

Anne McLaughlin

'We pay it forward'

Alumna Anne McLaughlin’s ties to the University of Victoria run deeper than most. For the past 33 years, Anne has been a generous donor, and this year was no exception.

By funding livestream equipment for the Phoenix Theatre she helped provide valuable learning opportunities for students and ensure the shows could go on, despite the pandemic.

COVID-19 recovery

Through the Research Accelerator Fund (RAF), donors are boosting six projects focused on making communities stronger in the wake of the pandemic.

Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne is leading one of those projects. Her team of researchers received $30,000 in RAF funding to better understand the lingering effects of COVID-19 on the brain.

Donor's Digest is a bi-annual compilation of stories, news and updates for and about the donor community at the University of Victoria. Thank you for making these possible by being part of that community.
