How do universities respond to the climate crisis, and what responsibility do they carry?
Join alumna Laura Lynch, host of CBC’s What On Earth, in conversation with Dr. Julia Baum, UVic’s Special Advisor on Climate, for a discussion on climate research, action and impact. The conversation will examine UVic’s climate-related work within a broader national and global context, and consider the opportunities and challenges involved in translating research into action.

Meet the speakers:

Laura Lynch, LLB ’88, is an award-winning journalist with a career that has taken her across Canada and around the world. She has reported from war zones, political battlegrounds and courtrooms, with postings in Washington, London and beyond. Now based in Vancouver, she brings her global perspective to climate journalism as the host of CBC’s What On Earth, helping Canadians understand the challenges and solutions to the climate crisis.

Dr. Julia Baum is a professor of ocean ecology and global change at UVic and a leading expert on climate impacts and nature-based solutions in coastal ecosystems. She directs Canada’s first graduate program dedicated to training climate solutions leaders and serves as UVic’s Special Advisor on Climate. Recognized internationally, Julia is a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars and an NSERC Steacie Fellow.
