in honour of Dr. Lyn Davis

Dr. Lyn Davis

Lyn (Evelyn Jean) Davis, a long-time HSD instructor, died unexpectedly October 24, 2023, in Victoria, following a brief illness.

Lyn loved learning her entire life. After 4 years at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC, Lyn completed her BA at Florida Atlantic University and her MA and PhD at Florida State University. After a long and successful career as a self-described “policy wonk” and consultant in the US and then in Victoria, Lyn at last found her true vocational love when she began teaching in the Faculty of Human and Social Development at the University of Victoria, where she was widely respected as a generous colleague and mentor.

Lyn began her HSD teaching career in Nursing in 2002, with subsequent stints in Public Administration and SPP; she had the great fortune to finish her teaching career in the School of Public Health and Social Policy, where she taught from 2012 to 2017. In PHSP, her main focus was on the undergraduate program, and during these years, Lyn said she learned much more than she taught. In 2014, she was named the most effective teacher in HSD and won the "HSD Teaching Excellence and Educational Leadership Award".

In 2018, Dr. Lyn Davis created the Dr. Charlotte Loppie Award Endowment to honour Dr. Loppie's teaching and service to many Indigenous communities, and to enact reconciliation. Every year, one or more awards are given to Indigenous undergraduate students in the School of Public Health and Social Policy, with preference given to mature (22 years or older) Indigenous women. Lyn's wish was for the award recipient to feel seen, accepted and part of the School of Public Health and Social Policy, and to enjoy their colleagues and their studies, and emerge from their studies with new tools and confidence.
