Vikes Championship Breakfast

SAVE THE DATEThe Vikes Championship Breakfast will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 in McKinnon Gym. Going on its seventh year, the Championship Breakfast is the largest fundraiser for Vikes Athletics.

With your help over the past 6 years, the Breakfast has raised over $2 Million for athletic awards and scholarships. "The success of the Championship Breakfast has made a remarkable impact on Vikes student-athletes," states Clint Hamilton, director of Athletics and Recreation. "We now have alumni who have, as a student, benefitted from the Breakfast during their five-year varsity career. It is evident that this generation not only appreciates the support but also understands the importance of stepping up to support future generations."

This year's keynote speaker is Vikes alumna and three time Canadian Olympic Rower, Darcy Marquardt. Registration for this event is now open, and can be found at www.govikesgo.com/breakfast. We are looking forward to your support!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Teri Kerr, Vikes Alumni and Development officer, at terikerr@uvic.ca or 250-472-4642.

Imagination takes health to new heights
By: Miranda Harvey - Assistant to the Director, Campaigns

A sunny patch of grass on the slope next to McKinnon affords me a view I don't often get from my home base in the Ian Stewart Complex: newly installed windows reflect blue sky and the passing clouds; workers snake in and out of steel supports, while welders fount waterfalls of sparks. A monstrous glass tower dominates the view, promising endless climbing fun. Closing my eyes to save my sight from such an overwhelming spectacle of stimuli, my ears fill with the sounds of power tools, hammering and burly voices shouting orders. This is CARSA.

The building itself now nearly matches the rendering shown on the "Future Home" information sign displayed along Gabriola Road. I remember when CARSA was nothing but a massive hole in the ground, and my curiosity piqued for the end product. My mind begins to dream up what I might see on the inside, wondering how the same space will sound once the building is open and flooded with swarms of future users drawn from campus and its surrounding communities. My knees grow weak as I imagine how I will feel looking out from the top of thee 18-metre climbing tower.

As my imagination creeps closer to reality, so, too, does the construction progress at break-neck speed from concept to completion. But none of this could have been achieved without the confidence of the on-and-off campus communities in UVic's tradition of excellence. Like the construction effort, the fundraising campaign is also in full swing. UVic is calling on you to wear your UVic pride on your sleeve and make this capital campaign our most successful to date.

What can you imagine? A healthier lifestyle? A partnership with CanAssist? Your name on the building? The vision is becoming a reality. DONATE TODAY!!
